A specialist comparison to help you choose between the two most popular used Discovery generations
The Discovery 4 and Discovery 5 are both excellent choices — they just suit different priorities. This comparison covers the areas that actually matter when deciding between them, rather than just listing specifications.

This is where the Discovery 4 makes its strongest case on value. Discovery 4 prices typically run from around £10,000 up to £25,000 or more, while Discovery 5 prices typically start around £12,000 and can exceed £30,000 for later, higher-specification examples — so there's real overlap between the two rather than a clean split. Actual price depends heavily on year, engine, mileage, specification, condition, any preparation work carried out, and the warranty and aftercare included, so treat these as a general guide rather than a fixed budget. If you want maximum capability and practicality per pound spent, the Discovery 4 remains the strongest value proposition in the range.
HMC's own focus within the Discovery 4 range is the 2014–2016 3.0-litre diesel — later facelift cars that offer the strongest combination of capability, comfort, specification and value, and the examples we most actively buy and sell. A well-maintained 2014 or 2015 car is an excellent buy in its own right; 2016 is simply our preferred choice when budget allows, as the final model year, not a rule. Pre-facelift 2011–2013 Discovery 4s aren't our core focus, but we consider them selectively. Some 2011–2013 examples can carry higher ongoing VED costs, depending on their recorded CO₂ band. Buyers should check the exact registration before purchase — which is one reason many buyers choose to pay a little more for a 2014–2016 facelift car instead. On the Discovery 5 side, HMC's focus is the 3.0-litre diesel range from 2017–2020. Early examples used the 3.0 TD6, with later pre-facelift models using the 3.0 SDV6. The 2017–2018 cars can offer strong value, while 2019–2020 examples are often more expensive because they are newer or better specified. HMC specialises in 3.0-litre diesel Land Rover Discovery models — we do not buy or retail the 2.0-litre diesel Discovery 5 as part of our core stock programme.
The Discovery 5 is a generational leap ahead here. Touch Pro (and especially the post-2020 Pivi Pro) infotainment, better sound insulation, and a more car-like driving experience make the Discovery 5 feel significantly more modern day-to-day. The Discovery 4's infotainment in particular shows its age against any car from the last decade.
Both are genuinely capable off-road — this isn't a meaningful differentiator for most buyers. The Discovery 4's steel construction is arguably tougher for serious green-laning and overlanding use, while the Discovery 5's electronic Terrain Response is more refined and easier to use for occasional off-roaders.
The Discovery 4 is generally cheaper to service, insure and repair, thanks to simpler mechanicals and wider aftermarket/specialist parts availability. The Discovery 5's four-cylinder Ingenium diesel is more fuel-efficient than any Discovery 4 engine, but its complexity means repairs — when needed — tend to cost more. The Discovery 4's known issues (timing belts, air suspension, injectors) are well understood after over a decade on UK roads, and a good specialist knows exactly what to check. The Discovery 5's main reliability question is software and electrical — particularly on pre-2020 cars, where a full software update history matters more than mileage. Choose the Discovery 4 if you want maximum practicality and capability for your budget, and don't mind dated infotainment.
Choose the Discovery 5 if refinement, technology and a more modern driving experience matter more to you than outright value, and your budget can stretch to it.
There isn't a wrong answer — both remain among the most capable and practical used 4x4s available at their respective price points.
