The Land Rover Discovery 4 (2009–2016) is widely considered the sweet spot of used Discovery ownership — genuine seven-seat practicality and serious off-road capability at a fraction of Discovery 5 money. This guide covers what actually varies between examples, so you know what you're comparing when two adverts look similar but aren't.

Discovery 4 Generations & Facelifts

The Discovery 4 was built from 2009 to 2016 with one significant facelift in 2013/2014, which brought a revised front end, updated interior trim, and — most importantly — the switch from the 2.7L/3.0L TDV6 to the more powerful and more efficient 3.0L SDV6 engine across the range.

  • 2009–2012: Early cars, 2.7L TDV6 or 3.0L TDV6 engines, original interior and infotainment.
  • 2012–2013: Transition period — 3.0L SDV6 engine introduced, gradually replacing the TDV6.
  • 2014–2016 (facelift): Updated styling, revised interior, SDV6 engine standard, improved infotainment on higher trims.

As a general rule, later facelifted cars (2014 onwards) are the more usable everyday choice thanks to the stronger, more efficient SDV6 engine — but well-maintained early cars can still be excellent value.

Discovery 4 Engine Options

EnginePowerTorque0-62 mphMPG
2.7L TDV6 (2009–2012)190 bhp440 Nm9.9s30 mpg
3.0L SDV6 (most common)211 bhp520 Nm8.9s36 mpg
3.0L SDV6 HSE255 bhp600 Nm7.9s35 mpg
5.0L V8 Petrol375 bhp510 Nm6.9s18 mpg

The 3.0L SDV6 is by far the most common engine in the used market and represents the best balance of performance, efficiency and parts availability. The V8 petrol is rare in the UK and mainly of interest to enthusiasts rather than everyday buyers.

Discovery 4 Trim Levels

  • GS / S — Entry trim. Cloth seats, basic infotainment, smaller alloys.
  • XS — Adds part-leather, upgraded infotainment, larger alloys.
  • GS Commercial / Utility — Van-derived versions, less common, worth checking VAT status if buying privately.
  • HSE — Full leather, Harman Kardon or standard premium sound, sunroof, heated/cooled front seats.
  • HSE Luxury — Top trim. Adds rear entertainment, upgraded leather, extra chrome detailing. See our HSE vs HSE Luxury comparison for the full breakdown.
  • Landmark — Limited edition run, HSE-based with unique styling touches.

What to Check Before Buying a Discovery 4

  • Timing chain — check service history and ask specifically about timing chain condition on higher-mileage examples.
  • Air suspension — listen for the compressor running excessively, check for uneven ride height side-to-side.
  • Service history — always insist on documented, stamped service records rather than taking a seller's word for it.
  • Software updates — ensure the latest Terrain Response and infotainment software has been installed by a specialist.
  • Rust — check sills, rear tailgate and underside, particularly on pre-2013 examples.
  • Injectors and EGR — common wear items on higher-mileage diesels; ask if these have been addressed.

Running Costs

Fuel economy on the SDV6 is respectable for a 2.5-tonne 4x4, and insurance/servicing costs are generally lower than a Discovery 5 thanks to simpler mechanicals and wider specialist parts availability. See our full running costs guide for a detailed breakdown of fuel, servicing, tyres and consumables.

Is the Discovery 4 Right for You?

The Discovery 4 makes the most sense if you want genuine seven-seat, tow-capable, go-anywhere practicality without paying Discovery 5 money. You give up some infotainment polish and outright refinement — but for many buyers that's a reasonable trade for the price difference. If refinement and the latest technology matter more to you, our Discovery 4 vs Discovery 5 comparison will help you decide.
