Land Rover Discovery Common Problems to Watch Out For

The Land Rover Discovery is an exceptional vehicle, but like any complex 4x4, there are known issues to be aware of. Here's what our specialists look for on every car we purchase.

Air Suspension

All Discovery 3, 4 and 5 models use air suspension. The compressor is the most common failure point — listen for it running constantly or the car sitting unevenly. Replacement compressors cost £300–£600. Air bags themselves can also perish, particularly on older cars.

Timing Chain (Discovery 3 & 4)

The 2.7 and 3.0 TDV6 engines can suffer timing chain stretch, particularly if servicing has been neglected. Always verify service history and ask specifically about timing chain status on higher mileage examples.

EGR Valve and DPF

Common to most diesel SUVs — blocked DPFs on cars used mostly for short journeys, and sticky EGR valves causing rough running. Regular long motorway journeys help. Check for any warning lights.

Electrical Gremlins

Discovery 3 in particular can suffer from water ingress into the rear light clusters causing electrical faults. Discovery 5 early cars had software issues — ensure the latest software updates have been applied.
