Like most modern diesels, the Land Rover Discovery is fitted with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) to trap soot from the exhaust. Blocked or failing DPFs are a common complaint on the used market, particularly on cars used mainly for short journeys.
The filter needs a regular 'regen' — a period of sustained higher-speed driving that burns off trapped soot. Cars used mostly for short, low-speed trips (school runs, town driving) may never get hot enough to complete a regen, allowing the filter to clog over time.
A DPF warning light, reduced power ('limp mode'), increased fuel consumption, or a strong smell from the exhaust are all signs the filter needs attention.
