Best Year to Buy a Used Land Rover Discovery

Choosing the right model year is just as important as choosing the right trim level when buying a used Land Rover Discovery. Here's our specialist guide to the sweet spots.

Discovery 3: Best Year is 2007–2009

Early Discovery 3s (2004–2006) had more teething issues. The 2007 facelift brought improvements to the interior, updated bumpers and resolved many early software bugs. A 2007–2009 Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE represents excellent value.

Discovery 4: HMC's Focus is 2014–2016

HMC's main focus is the 2014–2016 Land Rover Discovery 4 3.0-litre diesel range. These later facelift models offer a strong balance of capability, comfort, specification and ownership value. A well-maintained 2014 or 2015 Discovery 4 can be an excellent buy, while the 2016 model is our personal preferred choice when budget allows because it is the final model year. That does not mean every 2016 is better than every 2014 or 2015. Condition, service history, timing-belt evidence, specification, mileage and preparation remain more important than the registration year alone. HMC actively buys and sells suitable 2014–2016 Discovery 4 models, especially genuine 3.0-litre diesel examples.

Discovery 5: Best Value is 2017–2020 3.0-Litre Diesel

The Discovery 5 launched in 2017 with significant electrical complexity. Early cars suffered from software and electrical issues that were progressively resolved. For HMC's stock and value focus, the strongest opportunity remains a well-maintained 2017–2020 Discovery 5 with the 3.0-litre diesel engine. Early 2017–2018 examples can offer particularly strong value, while later 2019–2020 cars may command more because they are newer or better specified.

The facelift was announced in November 2020 and is generally treated as the 2021 model-year update. It introduced newer technology, Pivi Pro infotainment and the D250/D300 powertrain range, but facelifted vehicles usually cost considerably more. For many buyers, a high-specification, well-maintained 2020 3.0-litre diesel may offer better value than a basic 2021 model. Buyers should compare specification, history, preparation, warranty support and price rather than assuming the newer model is automatically the better purchase.

Our Recommendation

For the best overall buy, look for a well-maintained 2014–2016 Discovery 4 3.0-litre diesel with full service history and documented timing-belt evidence — that's HMC's core focus, not a single "best" year. On the Discovery 5 side, HMC's focus is the 3.0-litre diesel range from 2017–2020. Early examples used the 3.0 TD6, with later pre-facelift models using the 3.0 SDV6. The 2017–2018 cars can offer strong value, while 2019–2020 examples are often more expensive because they are newer or better specified.
