Two of Land Rover's most popular models, the Discovery 5 and Range Rover Sport, are often compared by buyers with a £25,000–£50,000 budget. They share platforms and powertrains but are designed with different priorities in mind.
Practicality: Discovery 5 Wins Easily
The Discovery 5 is genuinely family-focused. It offers true seven-seat capability with a full third row that adults can use, a much larger boot, and a more upright, airy cabin. The Range Rover Sport's third row (when fitted) is really only suitable for children.

On Road: Very Close
Both are refined, capable motorway cruisers. The Range Rover Sport's lower roofline and slightly sportier tune give it an edge on driving dynamics. The Discovery 5 prioritises comfort and composure over sportiness — it floats over imperfections rather than body-roll through bends.
Off-Road: Discovery 5 Wins
The Discovery 5 retains Wade Sensing, Terrain Response 2 and genuine off-road credentials. The Range Rover Sport is capable too, but the Discovery 5 remains the more serious off-roader of the two.

Running Costs
Broadly similar — both use the same Ingenium diesel and petrol engines. Insurance is typically slightly higher for the Range Rover Sport. Parts costs are comparable.
Verdict
Choose the Discovery 5 if family practicality and genuine off-road ability matter. Choose the Range Rover Sport if you prioritise road presence and sportier dynamics. For used value and versatility, the Discovery 5 is hard to beat.
