Which Discovery engines use belts or chains?

Most Discovery 3 and Discovery 4 diesel V6 models use a belt-driven timing system, not a timing chain. The Discovery 4 3.0 TDV6/SDV6 also has a separate rear belt driving the high-pressure fuel-pump system. The Discovery 5 2.0 SD4 Ingenium is different: it is a separate four-cylinder engine that uses timing chains. Always confirm the exact engine, model year and VIN before applying maintenance advice.

Belt-driven engines: Discovery 3, Discovery 4 and Discovery 5 3.0 diesel

The Discovery 3 2.7 TDV6, Discovery 4 2.7 TDV6, Discovery 4 3.0 TDV6/SDV6, and the 2017–2020 Discovery 5 3.0 TD6/SDV6 use a belt-driven timing system.

The 3.0 diesel system has:

- a primary timing belt driving the camshafts; and
- a separate rear belt driving the high-pressure fuel-pump system.

Always confirm the exact engine, model year and VIN when checking service history. We make no claim here about the later 2021+ Discovery 5 D250/D300 engines — always confirm the exact engine fitted.

There are also short internal chains linking the intake and exhaust camshafts within each cylinder head — these are separate from the primary, scheduled-replacement timing belt, and are not a routine service item on a normally maintained engine.

These are interference engines: if either belt fails, pistons can contact the valves, typically resulting in serious and expensive engine damage.

Chain-driven engine: Discovery 5 2.0 SD4 Ingenium

The Discovery 5 2.0 SD4 Ingenium is a different four-cylinder engine and uses timing chains. It is not covered by the Discovery 3/4 2.7 and 3.0 diesel timing-belt advice above.

It has its own separate, well-documented issue — chain and tensioner wear, which can cause a rattle on cold start — so a rattling 2.0 SD4 should still be inspected by a specialist.

Replacement interval

We are not publishing a specific mileage or year figure here, because the factory-specified interval varies by engine and model year, and specialist guidance on this differs too. Always check the documented interval that applies to the specific vehicle, engine and VIN — ask us, ask a specialist, or check the owner documentation rather than relying on a generic number.

What to Check When Buying (belt-driven models)

Ask for dated documentary evidence of belt replacement (invoice or checklist showing date and mileage) rather than relying on a seller's word, a clean-sounding engine, or general service history alone — none of those confirm the belt itself has been done. A cold-start rattle is not a reliable way to judge belt condition; a worn belt can look and sound fine right up until it fails.

The 5.0 V8 petrol

The Discovery 4's 5.0 litre V8 petrol engine is a genuinely chain-driven design, unlike the diesels — don't apply the belt-replacement advice above to petrol V8 examples.
