Land Rover Discovery Gearbox Issues & Servicing
Most Discovery 3, 4 and 5 models are fitted with ZF automatic gearboxes, generally regarded as robust and reliable — but only when properly maintained.

The 'Sealed for Life' Myth

ZF gearboxes are often described as 'sealed for life,' which leads many owners to assume the fluid never needs changing. In reality, most specialists recommend a fluid and filter change every 60,000–80,000 miles to keep the gearbox shifting smoothly and to protect its long-term health.

Warning Signs

Hesitant or jerky gear changes, a delay when pulling away, or the gearbox flaring between gears can all indicate the fluid is overdue for changing, or in more serious cases, wear within the gearbox itself.

What to Check When Buying

Ask whether the gearbox fluid has ever been changed and when. A car with no record of a fluid change at high mileage is worth a closer look before you commit.
