Buying a Land Rover Discovery from a private seller can save you money compared to a dealer, but it requires more due diligence. Here's our complete checklist.

Before You View

Always run an HPI check before travelling. This confirms the vehicle hasn't been stolen, has no outstanding finance, and hasn't been written off. Budget £20–£30 for a comprehensive HPI check.

Verify the seller's name matches the V5C registered keeper. Meet at the seller's home address — never in a car park or neutral location, as this is a classic sign of a car being sold without the seller's knowledge of its history.

At the Viewing

Check the VIN plate (typically on the dashboard, driver's door sill and under the bonnet) matches the V5C. Any discrepancies are a red flag.

Look for: uneven panel gaps (crash damage), mismatched paint (touch-ups or resprays), water ingress in the boot or under carpets, and any dashboard warning lights.

For air-suspended Discoverys: let the car settle after a cold start and check it sits level. Ask the seller to start from cold if possible.

Test Drive
